About Sumatra
Sumatra Innovation is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth through civic education and engagement about the democratic systems and political structures that shape our everyday lives. Our interactive workshops bring European history, politics and policies to life directly in schools. Our mission? To raise awareness. To promote critical thinking. To stimulate constructive discussion. Through a mix of historical insights, ongoing policy discussions and participatory activities, we aim to help the next generation become informed and active citizens by giving them the tools they need to explore the mechanics of politics and play a role in the world around them.
Why "Sumatra" ? As one of the first islands to harness technology in response to ecological and climate challenges, Sumatra embodies the spirit of adaptation and resilience. It is a symbol of transformation. To us, it reflects the broader shifts the world is facing: the social, economic, environmental, and technological revolutions. Sumatra Innovation is our way of embracing this momentum, inspiring a new way of thinking, learning, and acting.
Meet Our Team !

"My degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Maastricht gives me solid expertise in political and economic analysis. My participation in the MARBLE programme of excellence and my experience of over 300 hours as a tutor in economics, mathematics and statistics have given me a remarkable ability to break down and explain the complexities of political and economic systems. Sumatra Innovation was created with one ambition in mind: to make politics accessible to everyone. Aware of the impact it has on our daily lives, I've always believed that politics should be taught from an early age."

"Having completed a number of training courses in the field of animation, I have extensive experience in the creation of games, including for people with disabilities. My past experience as a holiday centre coordinator and activity leader trainer gives me the ability to create learning environments that are inclusive, stimulating and fun. So I want to use these skills to help Sumatra Innovation turn political debates that are difficult to understand and sometimes boring into something fun and interactive."

"A few years ago, I realised how little I actually knew about the European Union, even though many of the decisions it makes directly affect my daily life. Like many other young people, I felt the distance between the EU institutions and its citizens. This experience stayed with me and shaped the path I took. In my Bachelor's degree in European Studies at Maastricht University, I learned how the EU works, its history, its politics and its global influence. With Sumatra Innovation, I now want to pass on this knowledge and bridge the gap between the youth and the EU. Because an informed generation is a responsible generation, and this is how we can build a more democratic and interconnected Europe !"

"My training in political science led me to discover a real interest for politics and all the subjects that revolve around it. I really grasped its impact on our daily lives, and the importance of being informed and able to take action on these different aspects. Through my experience in youth animation, I became aware of the lack of interest in politics among young people and the need to give them a taste for it and the desire to take an interest. Through Sumatra Innovation, I want to give new impetus to political subjects and issues in order to inspire young people to get involved and take action."
